Style Series Part VI: Leaning into My Dad’s Legacy
I learned a lot about life from my dad. He consistently reminded me that quality time matters. Gentle words matter. Laughter matters. Ease matters. Play matters. Fun matters. JOY matters.
He was a gentle spirit – at least with me – and had a way to lighting up any space he was in. His laugh was hearty, his walk smooth, his smile authentic. He lived big and he loved hard. He had his own share of demons that played out in his relationship with others, including my mom, but I knew nothing other than kindness, affection and care from him.
And while how my dad cared for me remains etched in my heart, I never thought much of his fashion sense.
It has been 33 years that I’ve lived without his physical presence and as of late, I find myself reaching for old photos of him more frequently. Only recently did I notice just how much effort he put into what he wore.
Yes, he was a man of the 60s and 70s so adorning bell bottoms was a common trend. But he added hats, scarves, leather jackets and sunglasses. He leaned toward prints and fitted looks to accentuate his tall, slender frame. I haven’t seen one photo of him where what he was wearing was just basic – there was always an additional touch. He went the extra mile.
As I continue my exploration of fashion and style, I have yet another reason to honor, as well as celebrate, my journey. I dedicate this venture to my dad, perhaps my first intimate introduction to the world of fashion and style.
